[Jeta] Also written as Jihuan; here translated as "Victory in Battle." When he was born, his father Prasenajit had won a battle against a foreign country. The Record of the Western Regions says: "Jeta, in the Tang language called Shenglin (Grove of Victory). The old form Jituo was an error." Regarding what the scriptures call the Jeta Grove, the Record of the Western Regions says: "At that time, Anāthapiṇḍada wished to build a monastery, and the Buddha ordered Śāriputra to accompany him and inspect [a site]. Only Prince Jeta's park was open and elevated. [Anāthapiṇḍada] immediately went to the prince and told him the whole situation. The prince said in jest: 'Only if it is covered with gold will I sell it.' Hearing this, Sudatta's mind was filled with joy. He immediately brought out his treasury of gold and spread it across the ground according to his words. There remained a small section not yet covered, and the prince asked him to stop, saying: 'The Buddha is truly a fertile field; good seeds should be planted therein.' Thereupon, on the remaining land he built a monastery. The World-Honoured One then told Ānanda: 'From now on, this place should be called the Prince Jeta Grove and Anāthapiṇḍada Park.'"
