[Vaiśālī] Also called Weiyeli, Bisheli, or Feisheli. Here it is translated as Vast and Adorned. The *Xiyu ji* says: “The country of Feisheli, formerly mistakenly called Pishali.” Master Jīva says: “*Bi* means rice, which is what the land is suited for. *Liye* means vast and adorned; its land is level, regular, and adorned.” The *Jingming lueshu* says: “Here it is translated as Vast, Broad, Adorned, and Pure. The country is spacious and level, hence called vast and broad. Its cities and towns are magnificent, hence called adorned and pure. Some masters translate it as 'Fine Rice,' because it produces fine nonglutinous grain superior to other countries. Some say 'Good Roads,' because the country has roads that are level and straight (*di*, pronounced *zhi*, meaning level and straight). Some say 'Fond of the Way,' because the people of the country take pleasure in the correct Way, cultivate benevolence and righteousness on their own, and do not need a sovereign; five hundred elders practice the methods of the Way together, and all the people of the land submit with joy.”
