[Vikrama-arādhitā (vīrya)] translates as right diligence (samyak-prahāṇa). There are four dharmas here. The Fajie cidi says: "1. Wholeheartedly exerting vigor to abandon and sever unwholesome dharmas that have already arisen. At the time of the contemplation of the four foundations of mindfulness, if a mind of laxity arises, the five hindrances and other afflictions cover the mind, and one is separated from the five wholesome roots such as faith, when such unwholesome things have already arisen, in order to sever them, one wholeheartedly exerts vigor, using expedients to eliminate and sever them completely. 2. Wholeheartedly exerting vigor to prevent unwholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen from arising. At the time of the contemplation of the four foundations of mindfulness, though a mind of laxity, the five hindrances, and other afflictive unwholesome dharmas have not yet arisen, fearing that they might arise later and obstruct the five wholesome roots such as faith, now in order not to let them arise, one wholeheartedly exerts vigor, using expedients to check them so that they cannot arise. 3. Wholeheartedly exerting vigor to bring about wholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen. At the time of the contemplation of the four foundations of mindfulness, when the five wholesome roots such as faith have not yet arisen, in order to cause them to arise, one wholeheartedly exerts vigor, using expedients to cultivate and practice so that the wholesome roots such as faith arise. 4. Wholeheartedly exerting vigor to increase wholesome dharmas that have already arisen. If at the time of the contemplation of the four foundations of mindfulness, the five wholesome roots such as faith have already arisen, in order to make them increase, one wholeheartedly exerts vigor, using expedients to cultivate and practice the wholesome roots such as faith, so that they do not regress and are brought to growth and fulfillment. These four are collectively called right diligence because they destroy heterodox paths and practice diligently within the correct path, hence they are called right diligence."
