Great space and the water-moon both illustrate that substance is empty; rabbit horns and turtle hair both exemplify nominal designations as false. Turning away from stability on account of motion is likened to the bank shifting while the boat moves; straying from the real because of delusion is compared to the moon traversing while the clouds race. The life-and-death of the six realms is like a decrepit burning house; the nirvāṇa of the buddhas is likened to an isle of cool jewels. Now, wishing to open up understanding, I have collected metaphors, so that those who hear the Dharma may see the moon and forget the finger, hoping that practitioners, having reached the shore, will abandon the raft; hence I adduce and expand upon them.
