[Four Analogies]
In the Suvarṇaprabhāsa Sūtra, the four buddhas together cite the weight of mountains, the drops of the ocean, the dust of the earth, and the realm of space—which may still have limits reached—yet no one can calculate the lifespan of Śākya the Honoured One. Tiantai explains: If viewed from the doubt of Ruciraketu, one should say his lifespan has a measure. If viewed from the explanation of doubts by the four buddhas, one should say his lifespan is measureless. Gushan's Suoyin did not treat this passage properly; by clinging to the measured nature of the analogue, he was confused about the measureless nature of that which is illustrated. Using the three impermanent numbers of the lower levels, he explained the three eternally enduring lifespans of the upper levels. Sambhogakāya and nirmāṇakāya were conflated, and the doubts and explanations were reversed. In providing guidance to later generations, one should examine this closely.
