[Ten Jewels] The Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra says: 'I shall peacefully abide in the ten grounds, with ten kinds of precious jewels as feet.' Tiantai explains: As for precious jewels, the causes of the ten grounds are precious, and the various grounds are themselves precious jewels. As for feet, the ten grounds are the foundation of the house of fruition, hence called feet. Furthermore, the ten pāramitās are the feet of the ten grounds. Regarding the remaining merits, it is not that one does not cultivate them, but does so according to one's capacity and measure. Dāna is properly the foot of the first ground; when the foot of dāna is complete, one attains entry into the first ground, and so on up to when the foot of the perfection of wisdom is complete, one attains entry into the tenth ground. Also, like the ten similes of the Lotus Sūtra illustrating superiority, the text appears in that sūtra.
