[Śānta] (Pronounced dū-è). In Qin it means "quiescence" (śānta). In the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā Sūtra, as for the śa-syllable gate, it is because one enters into the ungraspability of the samādhi of all phenomena. The Śāstra says: "One immediately knows the quiescent characteristic of all phenomena." Miaole says: "This intonation of quiescence is the extinction of arising, not the extinction identical to arising. Extinction identical to arising is non-extinction. As the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa says: 'Phenomena are originally not thus, and now they have no extinction; this is the meaning of quiescence.'" In the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, when intoning the syllable śa (pronounced shī-hè), it is called following the radiance of all Buddha's Dharma-wheels. The Commentary says: "Namely, the nature of tranquility."
