[Ālayavijñāna] The Awakening of Faith says: "Because it relies on the ālayavijñāna, it is said that ignorance exists; unawakened, it arises (first, the aspect of karmic consciousness), is capable of seeing (second, the aspect of the evolving consciousness), is capable of manifesting [realms] (third, the aspect of the manifesting consciousness), and is capable of grasping cognitive objects, giving rise to continuous thoughts; therefore it is called manas." This explains that with ignorance as condition, the three subtle aspects are generated, called the delusion of ignorance. With cognitive objects as condition, the six coarse aspects are generated (first, the aspect of knowing; second, the aspect of continuity; third, the aspect of grasping; fourth, the aspect of reckoning names; fifth, the aspect of generating karma; sixth, the aspect of suffering bound by karma), called the delusions of view and thought. Ignorance is the root delusion, which obstructs the principle of the middle way; one should cultivate the middle contemplation to destroy this distinct delusion. View and thought are branch delusions, which obstruct the principle of the truth of emptiness; one should cultivate the contemplation of emptiness to destroy this common delusion. If the common and distinct delusions are eliminated, the principles of the truth of emptiness and the middle way will naturally become manifest.
