[Skandha] Here translated as aggregate (yun); aggregate means accumulation. In ancient translations it was "yin" (obscuration); yin means covering over. It accumulates the conditioned, and covers over the true nature. Also, the Benevolent King Sūtra says: "The ineffable consciousness produces the two dharmas of form and mind in all sentient beings; form is called the aggregate of form, and mind is called the four aggregates. All are by nature accumulative, concealing the true reality." Here, form, feeling, perception, karmic formations, and consciousness are called the five skandhas (the commentary and subcommentary on the Heart Sūtra explain the five skandhas in full). The Yinyi zhigui says: "From the Han dynasty on, sūtra translators rendered it as 'yin'; coming to Sengrui of the Jin dynasty, it was changed to 'zhong' (multitude); coming to the Tripiṭaka Master of the Tang dynasty, it was changed to 'yun' (aggregate)."
