【Kṣema】 Here translated as 'land' or 'fields'. The *Yingluo jing* says: 'A land is the dwelling place of the worthy and the noble.' Tiantai, in explaining the Buddha-lands in the *Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa-sūtra*, states: The Buddhas' benefiting of beings is limitless and boundless; now they are summarized into four: 1. The Land of Impurity and Purity, where ordinary beings and sages dwell together; 2. The Land with Remainder, where people of expedient means abide; 3. The Land of Recompense, where purely the dharmakāya dwells, which is the unobstructed land of Indra's net; 4. The Land of Eternally Quiescent Light, which is the dwelling place of wondrous enlightenment. Although the names of the four lands originated with Zhiyi, the meaning of the four lands is originally contained in the sutras and treatises. Now, extending the bequeathed teachings, seven gates are briefly opened.
