The Bodhisattva Precepts Sūtra says: "Implements for sustaining life and conforming to the Way." The Madhyama Āgama says: "Objects stored that can sustain the body and advance the Way are implements that increase wholesome dharmas." The Bianzheng lun says: "Śramaṇas have conduct surpassing the ordinary world, and their minds wander beyond worldly dust; therefore, their alms-bowls are not what is displayed in court halls, and their dyed robes differ from the garments of royal audience." The Beishan lu says: "The fu and gui baskets, the zu chopping board and dou platters, with their regulations and designs, are the implements of ritual propriety. Ascending and descending, moving about, bearing the shoulder and layering robes, are the outward forms of ritual propriety. Bells, drums, pipes, and chiming stones, feathers, flutes, shields, and axes are the implements of music. Bending and stretching, bowing and looking up, the measured movements slow and fast, are the outward forms of music. If these are set aside, ritual propriety and music fall into disuse. Copying texts and painting statues, incense tables and Dharma low-tables, are the implements of virtue and the Way. Shaving the head, prostrating, circumambulating, meditating, lecturing, fasting, and observing precepts, are the outward forms of virtue and the Way. If these are relaxed, virtue and the Way decline."
