[Saṃkakṣikā] Or saṃkakṣikā (sengqueqi). The Xiyu ji says: 'In the Tang language, this means covering the armpit. Anciently it was also called jiechi; the correct name is saṅkacikā. This means the robe covering the armpit. It is used to cover the left shoulder, open on the right and closed on the left.' Zhu Daozu says: 'During the Wei dynasty, monks were invited inside [the palace] for the pravāraṇā. The palace women saw that the monks had one shoulder bared and did not consider it proper, so they made this robe and bestowed it upon the monks. It was sewn onto the saṃkakṣikā on the left side, and from this received its designation, which is the right side of the pian-shan. Nowadays the name saṃkakṣikā is concealed, and both sleeves together are commonly called the pian-shan. When making it nowadays, one must open the back seam and cut the collar, in order to preserve the original style.'
