[Mālā]: Here translated as garland. Master Yuan says: "All flowers are generically called kusuma; there is also a specific flower uniquely called kusuma. It is translated here as 'pleasing to the mind' (sumana); its blossoms are about the size of a coin, extremely bright white in colour, formed by numerous fine petals clustered together into a circle." Dharma Master Ying says: "Garland-makers in the Western Regions mostly use sumana flowers, stringing them together in rows to make cords. Regardless of gender, noble or base, all adorn themselves with these, wearing them as ornaments on their heads or bodies." The Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna sūtra says: "Those born in heaven have flower garlands upon their foreheads."
