Several centuries after the Tathāgata's nirvāṇa, there was the Venerable Dharmaśreṣṭhin, who, from within the Sūtrapiṭaka spoken by the Buddha, extracted the essential matters into 250 gāthās, entitled *Abhidharmahṛdaya*. Later, there was also the Venerable Dharmatrāta, who reviewed what he had composed, and, considering that the literary form was insufficient and the principles had omissions, further searched through various sūtras and composed another 350 gāthās to supplement what was lacking, calling it the *Saṃyukta-hṛdaya*. The old and new verses together totaled 600 sections, divided into eleven chapters. The titles of the chapters were retained from the old; only the one chapter, 'Investigation', was entirely different from the earlier work. Venerable Dharmatrāta then personally cited various treatises extensively to unfold its meaning. No matter was unlisted, and nothing listed was unanalyzed. The subtle words and profound purport were thereby illuminated. From this time on, the Way flourished in the world, and scholars who engaged with it all treasured it as a fine topic of discourse. In the third year of Yuanjia of the Song dynasty, Wang Zhongde of Taiyuan, Inspector of Xuzhou, invited the foreign śramaṇa Īśvara to translate it in Pengcheng. Half of the 'Investigation' Chapter and the one chapter on 'Treatises' could not be completed because an incident arose. In the eighth year of Yuanjia, there was an Indian Dharma master named Guṇavarman, who had attained the fruit of the sakṛdāgāmin and was well-versed in this scripture; he came to travel in the capital Yangdu. They further revised it and consulted him on the great principles. Unworthy and short of insight as I am, I was placed at the end of the two assemblies, and have recorded what I heard to instruct upon the sentences and phrases, hoping it will provide more than half the benefit to those who examine it.
