The Marquis of Anyang, Juqu, was whose ancestors were Hu people of Lincheng County in Tianshui, a paternal cousin of Mengxun, the King of Hexi. Earlier, Mengxun destroyed the Lü clan, usurped the title in Liangzhou, and called himself the King of Hexi. Anyang was a man of strong will, open and unconstrained, acute, brilliant, and endowed with discerning wisdom. He dipped into books and records and was skilled in philosophical debate. In his youth he received the five precepts and applied himself diligently to Buddhist scriptures. Whatever sūtras he read, he was able to recite aloud from memory, constantly taking this as his task—emulating the glorious deeds of the Great Being of Vast Learning. In his youth, he once crossed the shifting sands to the kingdom of Khotan. At the Great Gomatī Monastery, he met the Indian Dharma master Buddhasena and consulted him on doctrines of the Way. Sena originally studied the Mahāyāna, had outstanding natural talent, could recite half a koṭi of verses, and was thoroughly enlightened in the methods of meditation; thus the kingdoms of the Western Regions called him the Lion among Men. Anyang received from him the Chan yao mimi zhibing jing (Secret Meditation Sūtra on Curing Illnesses), becoming fluent in reciting it aloud from the Hu original. Later, returning east, in Gaochang Commandery he obtained one scroll each of the two contemplation sūtras of Avalokiteśvara and Maitreya. When he returned to Hexi, he immediately translated the meditation essentials, turning them into the Han language. Several years later, the Wei invaders under Tuoba Tao attacked Liangzhou, and Anyang's dynastic state was annihilated; he then fled south to the Song. Concealing his ambitions and humbling himself, he did not mingle in worldly affairs, constantly traveling and staying in stūpas and monasteries, resolving to live out his life as a lay Buddhist. When he first translated the two contemplation sūtras of Maitreya and Avalokiteśvara, Meng Yi, the Governor of Danyang, saw and praised them, inviting him for a meeting. After their first encounter, [Meng] admired and loved him deeply, repeatedly providing meals and generously supporting him. By the second year of the Xiaojian era, the nun Huijun of Zhuyuan Monastery, hearing him recite the meditation sūtra from memory, asked him to produce a written version. Anyang had practiced and mastered it for a long time, so his brush flowed without obstruction; in seventeen days, it was produced in five scrolls. That year, at Shangdinglin Monastery on Mount Zhong, he further translated the one-scroll Fomu niwan jing (Sūtra on the Nirvāṇa of the Buddha's Mother). Anyang lived free of wife and children, without desire for glory or profit; leisurely among companions in the Dharma, he propagated the scriptures. Consequently, both monastics and laity in the capital revered and praised him. At the end of the Daming era, he contracted an illness and died. At that time, there was a foreign monk named Guṇabhadra (Gongdezhi), of unknown country of origin. In the middle of the Daming era of the Song, he traveled about, arrived in Jingzhou, and lodged at Chanfang Monastery. The śramaṇa Xuanchang requested him to translate the Nianfo sanmei jing (Sūtra on the Samādhi of Mindfulness of the Buddha) in six scrolls and the Pomo tuoluoni (Māra-subduing Dhāraṇī). He stayed in Jingzhou for several years, and his final end was not known.
