After the Lesser Ānāpāna and the thirty-seven items, calm and contemplation, the vinaya, and the meaning of dharmas follow in order. Next after the thirty-seven items are the four noble truths; after the Lesser Twelve Gates are the three directions, thus making forty items of nirvāṇa. Calm, contemplation, and the four noble truths are practices for accomplishing the Path that cannot dispense with one another. Therefore, I compiled calm, contemplation, the three samādhis, the four dhyānas, and the four noble truths, appending them after the thirty-seven items, desiring that practitioners may examine them with ease and put them into practice. The preface has 265 characters; the root text has 2,685 characters; the sub-commentary has 2,970 characters; totaling 5,902 characters, excluding the final six lines of 80 characters which are not counted. Composed by Śramaṇa Zhu Tanwulan in the twenty-first year of the Taiyuan era of the Jin dynasty, the year bing-shen, in the sixth month, at the Xie Zhenxi Monastery in Yangzhou.
