When the Master Shi [Dao'an] was formerly in Guanzhong, he ordered Kumārabodhi to produce this scripture. That man was not conversant in the Jin language; the verses seemed difficult to translate, so he suppressed them without transmission, and when dividing sections, he simply called them sūtras. When Saṅghadeva was met, it was then known that these verses existed. When the verses were used to inspect the previous translation, beginnings and ends were largely obscured, mutually encroaching upon one another; what the translator could not convey was widespread. For this reason, he was encouraged to produce it anew. In the sixteenth year of Taiyuan of the Jin dynasty, the year being danyan and the zhen being chongguang (391 CE), in the winter of that year at the Southern Mountain Vihāra in Xunyang, Saṅghadeva himself held the Hu scripture, first reciting the original text, and then translating it into the Jin language. The bhikṣu Daoci acted as scribal recorder. By the autumn of the following year, he collated and corrected it once more with Saṅghadeva to establish it as the definitive version. At that time, the elders of the monastic assembly, Zhu Senggen, Zhi Sengchun, and others, eighty people in all, together with the local master, the Inspector of Jiangzhou Wang Ningzhi, and the upāsaka Prefect of Xiyang Ren Guzhi as dānapatis, all jointly encouraged and assisted in establishing it.
