In the past, after the Tathāgata's nirvāṇa, between the Qin and Han periods, the Venerable Dharmaśreṣṭhin composed the original *Abhidharmahṛdaya*, with a total of 250 gāthās divided into ten chapters. Later, in the era of the Jin restoration, the Venerable Dharmatrāta further added 350 gāthās to make eleven chapters, entitled *Saṃyukta-hṛdaya*. The titles of the ten chapters were retained from the old, with only the 'Investigation' chapter established separately as an innovation. The sequence and order of the chapters are arranged according to the meaning of the Four Truths: the 'Realm' chapter directly expounds the characteristics of dharmas to correspond to the Truth of Suffering; the three chapters on 'Action', 'Karmic Activity', and 'Latent Tendency' mostly discuss the root of birth and death to correspond to the Truth of Arising; the meaning of severing fetters and realizing cessation spoken of by the noble and holy corresponds to the Truth of Cessation; and the two chapters on 'Knowledge' and 'Concentration' mostly expound the uncontaminated path to correspond to the Truth of the Path. From then on, the various subsequent chapters mix and clarify the above matters, having no other separate essence. In the eleventh year of Yuanjia of the Song, the jiaxu year, there was a foreign śramaṇa named Tripiṭaka who, observing the transformation [of beings], traveled here. He had previously studied and mastered this scripture in a great kingdom; thereupon, the assembly of monks invited him to produce it. In the ninth month of that year, scholars were assembled at the Changgan Monastery in the Song capital. Dharma Master Baoyun translated the spoken words, and Dharma Master Huiguan served as scribal recorder. They examined, collated, and edited it, completing it after a full year. Incompetent as I am, Jing improperly participated at the end of the audience; though my thoughts did not reach the profound, I occasionally had shallow understandings. Now I reverently follow what I heard to present it to future generations, leaving the final judgment to the wise. Completed at the Xuzhijiang Hermitage on Mount Shining in Kuaiji.
