Dharma Master Kumārajīva arrived in Chang'an on the twentieth day of the twelfth month, in the xinchou year, the third year of the Hongshi reign of the Qin. In the summer of the fourth year, in the chamber above the western gate of the Xiaoyao Garden, he translated the explanatory treatise for the Heavenly King Yao. It was completed on the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month of the seventh year. In the course of this, he also translated sūtra texts, meditation scriptures, the monastic precepts, the Śata-śāstra, and the Explanation of the Essentials of Meditation, amounting to nearly 500,000 words; together with this explanatory treatise, it totaled 1,500,000 words. The first chapter of the treatise comprises thirty-four fascicles, explaining one chapter, which is the complete treatise. From the second chapter downward, the Dharma Master abridged it, extracting its essentials, which were merely sufficient to clarify and explain the meaning of the text, without providing the complete extensive commentary. Thus these one hundred fascicles were obtained; if it had been produced in its entirety, it would have been ten times this amount.
