Furthermore, the Bodhisattvabhūmi-dhāra-sūtra (Pusa dichi jing) has eight rolls and twenty-seven chapters, and is likewise divided into three sections: the first section has eighteen chapters, the second section has four chapters, and the third section has five chapters. It was translated in Western Liangzhou by Dharmakṣema during the reign of Emperor An of the Jin. At the beginning of the sūtra, there is a homage to the Three Jewels, without 'Thus have I heard,' resembling a compilation of the Buddha's words; no different names are mentioned in the text. Today, this version is sometimes entitled Bodhisattva Precepts Sūtra (Pusa jie jing), and sometimes entitled Bodhisattva Stages Sūtra (Pusa di jing). Although its text differs from the Bodhisattva Good Precepts Sūtra produced by the Tripiṭaka Master, they share five names; hence they are recorded together. Moreover, the doctrines explained in these two scriptures are similar, and at the root they seem to be one scripture; because people from different countries produced them, they became distinct works. Both explain the six perfections in sequence; their chapter titles are mostly identical, though the phrasing differs. I, Sengyou, have seen one copy of the Bodhisattva-bhūmi-sūtra whose Chapter on Precepts (tenth chapter of the fourth roll) was actually the Chapter on Precepts from the Bodhisattvabhūmi-dhāra-sūtra, and it also lacked the ninth Chapter on Giving. This was surely due to confusion during sun-drying; later people did not realize this and simply transmitted and copied it. Its missing portions are numerous, and I fear this will bring confusion. If one carefully examines the internal titles, it becomes clearly visible. If there is a copy of the Bodhisattva-bhūmi-sūtra that lacks the ninth Chapter on Giving, it is precisely this erroneous copy.
