The Hu original of the Avataṃsaka-sūtra had a total of 100,000 gāthās. Formerly, the monk Zhi Faling obtained these 36,000 gāthās from Khotan. On the tenth day of the third month in the fourteenth year of Yixi of the Jin, the year being Chunhuo, at Daochang Temple established by Sikong Xie Shi of Yangzhou, they invited the Indian meditation master Buddhabhadra to hold the Indic text in hand and translate the Hu into Jin. The śramaṇa Shi Faye personally acted as the scribal recorder. At that time, the Administrator of Wujun, Meng Yi, and General of the Right Guard, Chu Shudu, were the dānapatis. By the tenth day of the sixth month in the second year of Yuanxi, the translation was completed. The Hu text was collated twice in all. In the second year of Yongchu of the Great Song, the year Xinchou, on the twenty-eighth day of the twelfth month, the collation was finished.
