Toward the end of the Later Wei, there was Shi Zhizhan of Qizhou. He resided at Xiancao Monastery in a deep gorge of Rentou Mountain, north of the Great Mountain. He reduced his affairs, spoke little, and neither humans nor birds disturbed him. He read and recited the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra, and people could not fathom his inner cultivation. When he was about to die, the divine monk Baozhi said to Emperor Wu of the Liang: 'The srotāpanna holy monk of Xiancao Monastery in the north attains extinction today.' When Zhan died, he transformed without affliction, extending one finger on each hand. A foreign monk said: 'This is the first fruit.' He was returned and buried in this mountain. Later, when they opened [the tomb] to look, only his tongue remained unchanged as before. Thereupon, they erected a pagoda to mark it. The pagoda still stands today, and birds and beasts dare not trample upon it.
