I have examined and determined the sources of these excerpted Hīnayāna sūtras: twenty-five sūtras come from the Ekottarāgama; forty sūtras come from the Madhyamāgama; one hundred twenty-eight sūtras come from the Saṃyuktāgama; four sūtras come from the Dīrghāgama; fifty sūtras come from the Jātaka-sūtra; five sūtras come from the Damamūka-nidāna-sūtra; twelve sūtras come from the Yogācārabhūmi; eight sūtras come from the Arthavargīya; and the rest are from such sūtras as the Benqi and the Lalitavistara. All of these were fully catalogued as distinct chapters from their primary corpora, circulated and converted [beings], down to their canonical entry. Those cited in catalogues as emerging from the four Āgamas: these are original translations of distinct chapters whose text and meanings are both different, unlike sūtras that were excerpted [later]. Fearing that people might be confused between these two kinds of sūtras, I have once again critically evaluated and clarified them, distinguishing their titles and contents.
