During the reign of Emperor Wucheng of the Northern Qi, a mountain dweller east of Bingzhou was digging when he saw yellow and white earth. He also saw an object shaped like two lips, within which was a fresh, bright-red tongue. He reported the matter to the throne. The Emperor questioned both monastics and laity. The monk Fashang said: 'This is the incorruptibility of the six sense faculties of one who upholds the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra. Is it not the verifiable proof of reciting it a full thousand times?' Thereupon, they gathered those who upheld the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra to encircle it and recite the sūtra. As soon as they raised their voices, these miraculous lips and tongue moved simultaneously. All who witnessed it had their hair stand on end. The matter was memorialized to the throne, and it was placed in a stone casket and sealed.
