Chan Master Sengche of Xianquan on Mount Nangu in Jiangzhou once met a leper in a cave while walking. Che led him into the mountains, dug a cave for him, supplied him with food, and had him recite the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka. The man was originally illiterate and, moreover, crude and stubborn. Che taught him phrase by phrase, never wearying to the end. When he had recited nearly half the sūtra, he dreamed of someone instructing him, and thereafter grew somewhat clever. After he could recite five or six fascicles, he felt the sores gradually heal. Once the complete text was finished, his beard, eyebrows, and skin were restored as normal. Therefore, the sūtra says, "Good medicine for illness"—this truly was verified!
