Upasūna, prince of the country of Ujjayinī, translated as "High Sky", was gifted and luminous by nature, comprehending the profound and subtle. He devoted himself to the study of Buddhist scriptures, being particularly skilled in doctrinal meaning, thoroughly knowledgeable in phonetics, and also fluent in dialects. From the first year of the Yuanxiang era of Emperor Shanjian of the Eastern Wei, the year wuwu [538 CE], down to the second year of the Xinghe era, the year gengshen [540 CE], at the residence of Grand Commander Sun Teng in the capital of Ye, he translated: the Sengqiezha jing (four fascicles), the Da jiaye jing (two fascicles), and the Pinposuoluo wang wen fo gongyang jing (one fascicle)—altogether three works, totaling seven fascicles. Sengfang served as scribe. Furthermore, in the final years of the Datong era of Emperor Wu of the Liang, he came from the Northern Qi into the Liang and was granted an audience with the emperor. The emperor therefore detained him to stay, ordering him to take overall charge of foreign diplomatic missions. In that same year, he translated the Dacheng dingwang jing (one fascicle). In the second year of the Taiqing era, he encountered a Khotanese monk and obtained a Sanskrit text of the Shengtianwang bore; arriving at the sixth year of the Tianjia era of the Chen, the year yiyou [565 CE], he translated it into seven fascicles at Xingye Monastery in Jiangzhou. The śramaṇa Zhixin served as scribe.
