The śramaṇa Zhu Fonian was a native of Liangzhou. He left household life in his youth. His aspirations and conduct were pure and lofty, gentle without and bright within. Clear-sighted and sharp, he synthesized the study of numerous scriptures and was especially skilled in Chinese lexicography. For generations his family lived in Xihe, so he thoroughly comprehended regional languages, and there was nothing he did not master in both Sanskrit and Chinese pronunciations and meanings. In the Jianyuan reign of Fu Qin, he entered Chang'an together with Saṅghabhadra and others, interpreting the language for Bhadra and the rest. Across both the Fu and Yao dynasties, he stood as the ancestral master of translators. From the tenth year of the Jianyuan reign of Fu Qin, the year wuyin, through to the Yao Qin, Fonian translated: the *Yao lun* (twenty fascicles); the *Bodhisattva Yingluo jing* (twelve fascicles); the *Sūtra on Severing Fetters in the Ten Abodes* (eleven fascicles); the *Vinaya Sūtra* (ten fascicles); the *Sūtra on Severing Fetters in the Ten Stages* (ten fascicles); the *Sūtra on the Bodhisattva Dwelling in the Womb* (five fascicles); the *Vaipulya Lakṣaṇābhāva Sūtra* (five fascicles); the *Dharṇīdhara Bodhisattva Sūtra* (three fascicles); the *Sūtra on the Bodhisattva Dwelling Everywhere* (three fascicles); the *Bodhisattva Yingluo Benye jing* (two fascicles); the *Sūtra on the Causes and Conditions of Prince Fayid Having His Eyes Gouged Out* (one fascicle); the *Sūtra on the Intermediate State* (two fascicles); and the *Origin and Details of the Daśādhyāya Bhikṣuṇī Precepts* (one fascicle); in total thirteen works in eighty-two fascicles.
