The śramaṇa Buddhavarman (also written Foutuo, rendered here as "Armor of Awakening" [Juekai]) was a man from the Western Regions. His character was upright and straightforward, his intelligence surpassing the ordinary. Although he was thoroughly versed in the Tripiṭaka, he was particularly proficient in the Vibhāṣā-śāstra, constantly reciting this work and taking it as his spiritual essential. In the fifth year of the Yonghe era of the Northern Liang, the year yi-hai, he translated for Juqu Ziqian, prince of Hexi: the Vibhāṣā-śāstra, one work (one hundred fascicles), with Daotai as scribe. When Wei extinguished Liang, the scriptures were burned and forty fascicles were lost; currently, only sixty fascicles survive.
