The śramaṇa Shi Zhimeng was a native of Xinfeng County in Yongzhou. By nature upright and strict, his illustrious conduct was pure and flawless. Taking up monastic robes in his youth, he cultivated the practice with complete sincerity, his voice of chanting continuing from night into day. His resolve and magnanimity were vast, and his deep affection for the Buddha's Dharma prompted him to travel west in search of holy sites. Returning from the west during the Yonghe era of the Northern Liang, his route passed through the Jade Gate (Yumen), and right there in the Liang lands he translated: the Ban nihuan jing, one work (twenty fascicles).
