The śramaṇa Buddhabhadra [Buddhata/Buddhaxi] (translated as "Awakened Longevity" [Jueshou]) was a native of the country of Kashmir. In his youth he studied under the Mahīśāsaka school, specializing in the vinaya rules while also being versed in the essentials of meditation. In the seventh month of the first year of the Jingping era of the Deposed Emperor, Prince of Xingyang, of the Song dynasty, the year gui-hai, he arrived in the capital. Faxian had earlier obtained the Mahīśāsaka Vinaya in Siṃhala, but died before translating it. When the monastic assembly of the capital heard that Buddhajīva was skilled in vinaya, the community requested that he translate it. That winter, at the Longguang Monastery, it was translated into thirty-four fascicles, together with a Prātimokṣa (one fascicle) and Karmavācanā (one fascicle), making thirty-six fascicles in all. The Khotanese śramaṇa Zhisheng interpreted the language, while the śramaṇas Zhu Daosheng, Huiyan, and others served as scribes. Attendant-in-ordinary Wang Lian served as dānapati.
