The śramaṇa Dharmanandin (which means “Dharma Joy”) was a native of Tokhara. Leaving the mundane world in his childhood, his intelligence matured early. He chanted and investigated the scriptures, dedicating himself single-mindedly to his study. He comprehensively inspected the Tripiṭaka and recited the Āgamas from memory; his vast knowledge and wide learning embraced everything, and both near and far in foreign lands revered and submitted to him. From his youth he observed foreign lands, traveling everywhere through many countries, constantly making the propagation of the teachings his task. In the middle of the Jianyuan reign of Fu Qin, he reached Chang'an. Fu Jian, having heard of Nandin's reputation beforehand, received him with deep courtesy. In the twentieth year of the Jianyuan reign, the year wuzi, Fu Jian sent Dao'an to assemble scholar-monks to request Nandin to translate: the *Madhyamāgama* (fifty-nine fascicles); the *Ekottarikāgama* (fifty-one fascicles); the *Sūtra on the Causes and Conditions of King Aśoka's Son, Fayid, Having His Eyes Gouged Out* (one fascicle); the *Sūtra Compiled by Saṅgharakṣa* (three fascicles); and the *Tridharmaka Śāstra* (two fascicles); in total five works in one hundred and fourteen fascicles. The śramaṇa Zhu Fonian interpreted the language, and Huisong served as scribe.
