The śramaṇa Bodhiruci—in Chinese, Juexi—was a native of North India. Thoroughly versed in the Tripiṭaka, he had penetrated the wondrous dhāraṇīs, with his resolve set on propagating the Dharma and broadening the vision and hearing [of the world]. In the first year of the Yongping era of Emperor Xuanwu of the Wei, the year wuzi [508 CE], he arrived in Luoyang. Emperor Wu personally consoled and received him, housing and supplying him at Yongning Monastery. With seven hundred Sanskrit monks, Bodhiruci acted as translation master. In that same year, he translated the Shidi jing lun; on the first day, Emperor Wu personally served as scribe, and later entrusted the scribal duties to the śramaṇas Sengbian, Senglang, Daozhan, the Palace Attendant Cui Guang, and others. The Sanskrit texts numbered ten thousand wraps, and the draft texts taken down by scribes filled an entire room. He was thoroughly versed in local dialects and skilled in diverse arts as well. Once, while sitting by the mouth of a well, he held his washing pitcher suspended in the empty air; or he would chant over a well causing the water to surge up, so that he could ladle and use it.
