The śramaṇa Mandra, translated as "Weak Voice", also called "Vast and Gentle", was a native of Funan. His spiritual comprehension transcended ordinary insight, viewing both the unseen and the manifest completely. Fearing neither hardship nor danger, his mind was set on broadly propagating the transformation. Carrying a large collection of Sanskrit texts, he presented them in the second year of the Tianjian era of Emperor Wu of the Liang, the year guiwei [503 CE]. The emperor ordered him to translate them. In that same year, together with Saṅghabhara, in the capital of Yang [Jiankang], he translated: the Baoyun jing (seven fascicles), the Fajie tixing wu fenbie jing (two fascicles), and the Wenshushili shuo boreboluomi jing (two fascicles)—altogether three works, totaling eleven fascicles.
