The Governor of Yangchuan Commandery, Tan Fazhi, Sanskrit name Dharmaprajñā, was of brāhmaṇa lineage. For generations his family had handed down the art of translation. At the end of the Northern Qi he was the Chief Controller of Zhaoxuan Monastery. After the Qi state was subjugated, the Buddha-Dharma was destroyed along with it. Zhi, on account of his clerical office, was transferred to a secular post, being appointed Governor of Yangchuan Commandery in Yang Prefecture. In the second year of Kaihuang, the cyclical year Renyin, Emperor Wen of the Sui issued an imperial decree summoning Zhi back to have him translate scriptures. At Daxingshan Monastery he translated: the Karmavibhaṅga Sūtra (1 fascicle). Since Zhi was supremely proficient in both the Sui and Sanskrit languages, there was no need for interpreters. Śākya Zhixuan of Chengdu served as scribe.
