The śramaṇa Guṇavṛddhi—in Chinese, Dejin—was a native of Central India. Taking up the Way in his youth, he had a powerful memory and extensive learning, chanting two hundred thousand words of both Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna texts, and thoroughly exploring yin-yang and prognostication charts. Holding his staff on the path of the precepts, his deportment was dignified and austere. On the tenth day of the ninth month of the tenth year of the Yongming era of Emperor Wu of the Qi [492 CE], at Piye'li Monastery in Yangzhou, he began translating: the Baiju piyu ji (ten fascicles), the Shi'er yinyuan jing (one fascicle), and the Xuda zhangzhe jing (one fascicle)—in total, three works comprising twelve fascicles.
