The monk Devaprajñā (also called Devendrajñāna, translated into Tang [Chinese] as Tianzhi [“Heavenly Wisdom”]) was a native of Khotan. His learning spanned the Mahāyāna and the Hīnayāna, and his wisdom embraced both the ultimate and the conventional. In the first year of the Yongchang era under Empress Wu (689), he arrived at the capital. By imperial order, he translated scriptures at the Eastern Monastery of Wei State. From the first year of Yongchang, a yichou year (689), to the second year of Tianshou, a xinmao year (691), he translated the Dacheng zaoxiang gongde jing (Mahāyāna Sūtra on the Merit of Making Buddha Images) in two fascicles; the Dafangguang fo huayan jing busiyi fo jingjie fen (Inconceivable Buddha-Realm Section of the Buddhāvataṃsaka-sūtra) in one fascicle; the Dafangguang fo huayan jing xiuci fen (Cultivating Compassion Section of the Buddhāvataṃsaka-sūtra) in one fascicle; the Zhiju tuoluoni jing (Jñānolkā-dhāraṇī-sūtra) in one fascicle; the Zhufosi jihui tuoluoni jing (Sarvabuddhasamavāsa-dhāraṇī-sūtra) in one fascicle; and the Dacheng fajie wuchabie lun (Mahāyānadharmadhātunirviśeṣa-śāstra) in one fascicle—amounting to six works in seven fascicles altogether. The monks Zhan Tuo, Huizhi, and others served as interpreters; the monk Chuyi and others served as scribes; the monk Fuli and others served as text editors; and the monks Degan, Huiyan, Faming, Hongjing, and others served as certifiers of meaning.
