The monk Śikṣā-Huizhi’s father was an Indian of the brāhmaṇa caste, who had traveled here on a diplomatic mission and fathered Huizhi. Sharp and keen from his youth, Huizhi was skilled in both Sanskrit script and speech. For all the translations conducted by the Tripiṭaka masters Divākara, Devendrajñāna, Bao Siwei, and others, Huizhi was summoned to act as certifier and also tasked with oral interpretation. In the second year of Changshou under Empress Wu, a guisi year (693), at the Foshouji Monastery in the eastern capital, Huizhi personally translated the Zan Guanshiyin pusa song (Eulogy in Praise of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva) in one fascicle.
