The śramaṇa Jñānabhadra (in Tang: Zhixian) was a native of the country of Baling (also called Heling) in the Southern Sea. He was skilled in the learning of the Tripiṭaka. Formerly, during the Linde era, the śramaṇa Huining of Chengdu in the prefecture of Yi purposefully traveled to India to pay homage to the sacred traces. Sailing west on a ship, his route passed through the country of Baling, where he joined with Jñānabhadra to translate the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra crematorial section, one work (two fascicles), and sent the text back to Jiaozhou. Huining then proceeded to India. Later, at the beginning of the Yifeng era, Liang Nandi, Area Commander-in-Chief of Jiaozhou, dispatched an envoy to convey the text to the capital. In the third year (wuyin) [678], the śramaṇa Linghui of Dacien Monastery petitioned the Crown Prince's Palace to authorize its distribution and practice.
