Spurious sūtras are those fabricated by people of deviant views to bring confusion to the authentic sūtras. Since the Great Master concealed his form nearly two thousand years ago, demonic teachings have vied to arise, and the right Dharma has declined. Stubborn and foolish sorts, whose minds are deluded by evil views, have forged various sūtras to dupe and confuse worldly customs. That deviant words bring disorder to the orthodox—how could this not be lamentable! Now, fearing that the authentic and the spurious are intermixed, with right and wrong treated as the same—just as the precious jade of Mount Kunlun would flow alongside tiles and stones, or the pure gold of Jambudvīpa would share the same value as lead and iron—they are now distinguished individually so that the authentic and the spurious can be separated, hoping that the Jing and Wei rivers will flow distinctly without leaving future troubles.
