In the tenth year [of Yuanjia], a guiyou year, he walked across the shifting sands and arrived in Jianye. His bearing was grand and austere, and both clergy and laity respected and marveled at him. All venerated and served him, styling him "Tripiṭaka Master." Earlier, in the first year of Jingping, the magistrate of Pinglu, Xu Sang, had renounced his residence to establish a monastery, which was consequently named Pinglu Temple. Later, Huiguan of Daochang Temple, regarding [Guṇa]varman's practice of the Way as pure and complete, invited him to dwell in this temple, providing him with generous offerings to manifest his virtue. [Guṇa]varman, together with Huiguan, erected a three-storied stupa; their practice of the Way and their chanting continued day and night without cease. The monastic assembly gathered, and the propagation of the Way spread abroad. Earlier, the Tripiṭaka Master had deeply comprehended the vinaya categories and was about to confer full ordination again upon the nun Huiguo and others of Yingfu Temple. At that time, the two assemblies were not yet complete, and the Tripiṭaka Master passed away. Soon after, the bhikṣuṇī Tessarā and others from Siṃhala arrived. The assembly then jointly requested [Guṇa]varman to act as their master and continue the tradition of the Tripiṭaka Master. Huiyi of Zhihuan Temple, who had a prominent reputation in Yangdu, regarded this as an irregular novelty. Maintaining a divergent view, he personally engaged in back-and-forth debates with [Guṇa]varman to oppose him. [Guṇa]varman set forth the tenets and elucidated the teachings; his reasoning was clear, correct, and fair. Huiyi thereupon turned away from his obstinacy and narrowness, submitting wholeheartedly with admiration. He then led his disciples to embrace the teachings and receive the precepts from him. The monks and nuns who received them numbered several hundred. Prince Yikang of Pengcheng of the Song honored his disciplinary model, lavishly arranging vegetarian feasts and offerings for the four assemblies, so grand and splendid that the entire capital turned out. Soon after, the eminent and virtuous senior monk Huiguan and others, knowing that [Guṇa]varman had a wondrous understanding of the *Saṃyuktābhidharmahṛdaya-śāstra* and was thoroughly fluent in reciting it—which the previous Tripiṭaka Master had translated but not yet copied out in full—gathered scholars at Changgan Temple in the ninth month of the eleventh year to formally request him to bring it forth again. Baoyun translated the words, and Huiguan personally transcribed them in brush. After rigorous collating and thorough examination, it was completed only after a full year. In succession, he translated five works in all, such as the *Mātṛkā*. [Guṇa]varman's aspiration was to travel and transform beings, not lingering in any single place. Once the work of translating the scriptures was finished, he intended to return to his native land. Though the multitude all entreated him, none could detain him. In the nineteenth year of Yuanjia, he boarded a merchant ship from the Western Regions and returned to foreign lands; no one knows where his end came.
