The events arose in a single age, yet their benefit spans eternal generations: whether recording memorials presented upward or issuing imperial decrees downward, rulers were sagacious and ministers loyal, upholding and maintaining the semblance teachings. Yuanzhao, heedless of his own mediocre shallowness, lightly recounts these splendid exemplars, carefully setting them forth in order of years, months, days, and dynasties. Record of the Translation Eras and Transmission Lineage of the Five Vinaya Divisions of the Śākya Clan, 1 fascicle
On the nineteenth day of the fourth month past, on the anniversary of the Emperor's descent and birth, on the eastern side of the inner chapel, and on the previous day during leisure after withdrawing from meals, under the western gallery of Linde Hall, there were eleven persons, including the Chan-practicing Virtuous One Daocheng of Zhangjing Temple, Dahui of Zhuangyan Temple, Cangshan of Zongchi Temple, and Debate-Assembly Virtuous Ones of the three teachings such as Tanyan, who attended upon the Crown Prince. After the meaning of the mind-ground Dharma-gate was concluded, this petty monk Yuanzhao in person received an instruction asking about the Vinaya masters' determination of the Fangdeng śrāmaṇera precept characteristics, the length of the phrasing of the five Vinaya divisions, the karmavācanā for the merit-field kāṣāya Dharma robes, and the reasons thereof, commanding that this be compiled and presented. I submit: my intellectual capacity is dull and my studies are neglected; I have improperly mingled with the black-robed sangha for forty-two summers, sometimes presiding at the ordination platform to lecture on the Vinaya, sometimes composing commentaries and translating scriptures, yet I have by no means been able to master them or attain realization. I respectfully reflect that Your Highness, descended from Heaven and receiving the Buddha's entrustment, in the leisure of attending court, roams your mind in the Buddhist fold, inquiring into the propriety of the five Vinaya divisions, the determination of the Fangdeng precept characteristics, and the origins of conferring and upholding the karmavācanā teachings, wishing to prolong the life of the true Dharma, advance toward unsurpassed bodhi, exalt the wholesome causes of gods and humans, and realize unconditioned liberation. In careful accordance with the sūtras, vinayas, and treatises, I have compiled three fascicles, which I submit together with this petition to be heard on high. Lightly presuming against your awe-inspiring majesty, I humbly hope you will examine it in detail. Respectfully petitioned. On the twenty-third day of the eighth month of the ninth year of Zhenyuan, the platform-presiding, scripture-translating śramaṇa Yuanzhao of Ximing Temple respectfully petitions.
Record of the Newly Built Precious Stūpa for the Tooth of Our Root Teacher Śākyamuni Buddha at Dazhuangyan Temple, 3 fascicles
Record of the Stūpa for the True Body Relic of the Great Sage Śākyamuni Buddha at King Aśoka Temple of the Holy Dynasty, 3 fascicles
The above [record describes how] the Buddha's Dharmakāya is serene and ever-abiding, yet to transform the six destinies he taught the three bodies; within the Nirmāṇakāya he attained the Way through the eight aspects, manifesting complete quiescence with both whole body and divided body, guiding the four types of living beings and extensively raising benefits. I observe that the Buddha's tooth at Dazhuangyan Temple and the true body relic at King Aśoka Temple are the whole form and divided relics of the Great Sage Śākyamuni Buddha. More than a thousand years have passed, yet they are extraordinarily solid and lustrous. Clergy and laity reverently come and go to gaze upon and worship them, and the miraculous signs of their luminous transformations are difficult to describe fully. I respectfully reflect that Your Majesty, having received the Buddha's entrustment, broadly encourages the Buddhist fold, admiring and upholding the True Vehicle, and especially exalts the precious stūpas, whose lofty and magnificent structures outshine past and present. This petty monk, lacking talent, has carefully narrated their records, hoping to transmit these grand traces and hand down instructions for a thousand autumns. Fully recording the causes and origins, I have compiled three fascicles for each, together with two fascicles of Illustrated Records of Scripture Translations, all of which are now completed. I humbly wish that this will aid the Sagely Longevity on high with eternal, boundless blessings, that the four seas remain tranquil, and that the myriad realms share a single virtue. I respectfully submit them with this memorial to be heard, lightly presuming against Heavenly majesty and humbly awaiting the Sagely will. The śramaṇa Yuanzhao, with sincere fear and trembling, respectfully presents this. On the nineteenth day of the fourth month of the tenth year of Zhenyuan, the scripture-translating, platform-presiding śramaṇa Yuanzhao of Ximing Temple presents this memorial.
The above seven works in 11 fascicles together form the sixth case.
Collection of Stele Inscriptions for Virtuous Ones of the Three Learnings Who Transmitted the Dharma in the Tang Dynasty, 15 fascicles
Collection of Imperial Decrees and Buddhist Memorials of the Jianzhong, Xingyuan, and Zhenyuan Eras, 2 fascicles
Imperial Poems Inscribed at Zhangjing Temple and Collection of Matching Poems Presented by the Crown Prince and All Officials, 3 fascicles
Zhenyuan Continuation of the Kaiyuan Catalogue of Buddhist Teachings of the Great Tang, 3 fascicles (upper fascicle on scripture translation, middle fascicle on collections of commentaries and records, lower fascicle on the catalogue of works entering the canon)
The above four works, totaling 23 fascicles, are divided into the seventh and eighth cases.
The above newly compiled works of the Zhenyuan era total twenty-nine works, consisting of 86 fascicles excluding the catalogue. Whether they be decrees of past reigns or the abundant grace of the present Emperor, all encourage the Buddhist fold to cultivate pure conduct, bringing blessings and benefit to the country and family and extending universally to sentient beings. I submit: in the eighteenth year of Kaiyuan, the gengwu year, the śramaṇa Zhisheng compiled the Catalogue of Buddhist Teachings; up to the present jiaxu year, sixty-five years have elapsed. During this interval, the scriptures translated by the tripiṭaka masters have not been kept in the canon, and I fear that as the years recede into the distance, people will suspect them of being apocryphal scriptures. Furthermore, in the seventh year of Dali, the late Sage permitted their entry into the catalogue, and the text of the decree was proclaimed and circulated as shown above. Yuanzhao has always lacked artistic skills; heedless of his foolish clumsiness, he has diligently recorded what he has heard and seen, compiling them into a catalogue of three fascicles. I humbly pray that the sagely reign be long-lasting and that blessings extend to ten thousand generations; that the civil and military officials be utterly filial and loyal; that the Three Jewels prosper forever; and that distant realms be pacified and near realms reverent. If the sagely grace permits, I humbly beg that it be proclaimed and circulated. Lightly presuming against Heavenly majesty, with profound trembling, I respectfully present this.
On the twenty-fifth day of the twelfth month of the tenth year of Zhenyuan, the scripture-translating, platform-presiding śramaṇa Yuanzhao of Ximing Temple presents this memorial.
