Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, 40 fascicles (or 36 fascicles, in 4 cases).
Translated at Guzang by Dharmakṣema, Indian Tripiṭaka master of the Northern Liang.
(The fifth translation, a composite of individual and re-translations. When this Nirvāṇa-sūtra reached Jianye during the Yuanjia era of the reign of Emperor Wen of the Song, the śramaṇa Fan Huiyan of Youzhou, the śramaṇa Cui Huiguan of Qinghe, and the retired scholar Xie Lingyun of Chen Commandery, observing that Dharmakṣema's earlier text had coarse and brief chapter divisions, supplemented it with chapter titles based on the older Nihuán jīng. Where the text was excessively plain, they altered and rearranged it considerably into a thirty-fascicle text that circulated in Jiangzuo, which differed slightly from the earlier scripture. There is a one-fascicle treatise briefly explaining the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, and another one-fascicle treatise explaining the verse on 'originally existing but now absent'.)
Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra: Latter Portion of the Cremation, 2 fascicles
(also titled 'Śarīra Cremation Portion' [Shéwéi fèn], or 'Latter Portion').
Great Tang (translated jointly in the realm of Poling in the Southern Sea by the śramaṇa Jñānabhadra of that kingdom and the Tang śramaṇa Huining; single extant translation in the Great Zhou Catalogue).
The one scripture above is a supplement to the preceding Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, continuing from the end of the Kauṇḍinya Chapter to recount the events of the cremation and related occurrences after the parinirvāṇa. (Tripiṭaka Master Yijing's Biography of Eminent Monks Who Sought the Dharma states: During the Linde era, the śramaṇa Huining of Chengdu in Yifu traveled to India. Reaching the realm of Poling in the Southern Sea, he collaborated with the Tripiṭaka master of that realm, the śramaṇa Jñānabhadra—in Tang language, Zhixian—to extract from the Āgama scriptures the account of the Tathāgata's nirvāṇa and cremation; it is not the Mahāyāna Nirvāṇa-sūtra. He dispatched envoys to send it back, where it was compared with texts from India. Examining this scripture now, it bears a slight resemblance to the Yuxing jing [Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra] in the first portion of the Dīrgha-āgama, though they are not entirely identical. Moreover, the scripture speaks of the dharmakāya as eternally enduring, permanent, blissful, self, and pure, and describes the realm of Buddhas and bodhisattvas as beyond the grasp of the two vehicles, thereby intersecting in doctrine with the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra. Furthermore, the beginning of the text bears the title 'End of the Kauṇḍinya Chapter,' maintaining continuity in rhetorical flow, so it is temporarily catalogued here. Let the widely learned and wise examine and determine this.)
Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra [Dà bān níhuán jīng], 6 fascicles (or 10 fascicles).
Translated jointly by the Eastern Jin śramaṇa Shi Faxian of Pingyang and Buddhabhadra [Juexian]. Fourth translation.
The one scripture above is the earlier portion of the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, extending to the Chapter of the Great Assembly's Inquiry; it is a different translation of the same original.
(Together with the Cremation Portion, there were seven translations in all, four of which are missing texts.)
The above two scriptures, in 8 fascicles, share the same case.
Vaipulya-parinirvāṇa-sūtra, 2 fascicles (also titled Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, or in 3 fascicles).
Translated by the Western Jin Tripiṭaka master Dharmarakṣa. First translation.
Caturdārakasamādhi-sūtra, 3 fascicles (or simply titled Four Boys Sūtra).
Translated by the Sui Indian Tripiṭaka master Jñānagupta and others. Second translation.
The above two scriptures are different translations of the same original. (According to various catalogues, there is also an Ākrośana-sūtra [Aiqì jīng] in 2 fascicles, or 1 fascicle, noted as a different translation of the same original as the Vaipulya-parinirvāṇa-sūtra, though the circumstances of its translation are not detailed. Examining its phrasing, it is identical to the Vaipulya-parinirvāṇa-sūtra without any difference. The opening chapter of the Vaipulya-parinirvāṇa-sūtra is titled 'Weeping and Lamentation' [Āiqì], and this title was merely adopted as the scripture's name; compared to the Vaipulya-parinirvāṇa-sūtra, it lacks three chapters, while the rest is indistinguishable. Since it is redundant, it has been eliminated and is not catalogued.)
Mahākaruṇā-sūtra, 5 fascicles.
Translated by the Northern Qi Indian Tripiṭaka master Narendrayaśas together with Fazhi. Single translation.
The above three scriptures, in 10 fascicles, share the same case (the Vaipulya-parinirvāṇa-sūtra and the other two scriptures are offshoots of the Nirvāṇa class).
