Now, precepts are a general name for guarding against transgressions. The pure precepts of a bodhisattva restrain only the mind, whereas the moral discipline (vinaya) of the śrāvaka guards against physical and verbal actions; hence offenses arise dependent on circumstances, and assemblies of disciples are gathered to rebuke and enact rules. For the great bodhisattva beings, there are no such things at all. The Buddha directly expounds them so that they are made to follow them. Since there are no occasions of violating regulations, there are accordingly no matters of rebuking and formulating rules. The sections in various Mahāyāna sūtras that explain the training rules are excerpted here to form the Bodhisattva Vinaya Piṭaka.
