The Śrāvaka Piṭaka is the teaching expounded by the Hīnayāna. The teaching master who expounded it manifested birth and cessation, responding to beings according with conditions. The teaching expounded consists of the nine genres, the four Āgamas, the Abhidharma, and the Vinaya precepts. Good men and good women receive it and cast off worldly toil like worn slippers. Pratyekabuddhas and śrāvakas uphold it and ascend to the other shore. Indeed, it is the small carriage of the true vehicle, the phantom city of bodhi; for guiding and advancing beginners, nothing surpasses this. From the Deer Park to the Golden River, the texts of half-letters expounded are known as the Śrāvaka Piṭaka. When the hundred rivers converge in union and the three carts proceed together, all alike ascend to wondrous enlightenment and all together realize nirvāṇa. How could there be different names of small and great? They truly represent the gradual guidance of our Lord. From the dingmao year of Emperor Ming of the Han to the gengchen year of our Kaiyuan era, the Hīnayāna Tripiṭaka currently circulating comprises in total 337 works in 1,809 fascicles and 170 cases, constituting the Śrāvaka Dharmapiṭaka. The sectional items are distinctly displayed, set forth in full as follows.
