Upāsaka Zhi Shilun was a native of Yuezhi. He was well versed in various scriptures and was particularly skilled in the Vaipulya teachings. Intending to guide and convert, transmitting what had not yet been heard, he brought scriptures and traveled, arriving in the Liang region. Master Zhang met him, valued him, and requested him to translate. In the third year of Xian'an, guiyou (following the Jin reign title),
at the Zhanlu Pavilion behind the main hall within Liangzhou, he translated four works including the Xulai jing. Bo Yan, crown prince of Kucha, served as interpreter. Zhao Xiao, Attendant-in-Ordinary of Xihai; Ma Yi, Magistrate of Huishui; and the Inner Attendant Lai Gongzheng—the three of them served as scribes. Śramaṇas Shi Huichang and Shi Jinxing both attended to verify the text. In Liangzhou, they composed the text directly without ornamental embellishment. Taken from the postscript to the Xulai jing and the postscript to the Shoulengyan jing. (More sūtras might have been produced during the Former Liang; if later scholars encounter them, it is hoped they will continue to append them).
