The Dharma is fundamentally without words, yet without words it cannot be revealed. Suchness is devoid of form, yet it requires form to be awakened to. Although one may confuse the finger for the moon, alerting and guidance know no bounds. Far from being merely prized as marvelous sights to astonish the eye, these are truly treasures to protect the nation and benefit the people. Furthermore, the Secret Piṭaka is profound and mysterious, difficult to convey in writing. It requires paintings and diagrams to instruct those who are not yet awakened. The various dignified bearings and various mudrās issue from great compassion; seeing them once brings buddhahood. What is secretly and succinctly treated in the sutras and commentaries is displayed in these painted icons. The essentials of the Secret Piṭaka are truly bound up in this! When transmitting or receiving the Dharma, who could abandon these? Truly, these are the fundamental source for the oceanic assembly.
