If one speaks of giving without marks,
The merit is exceedingly difficult to measure.
Practicing compassion to relieve the destitute,
One need not look for a karmic reward.
Ordinary beings have inferior dispositions and practices,
So at first [the Buddha] merely praised it briefly.
If you wish to know the appearance of dāna,
It is like space pervading the ten directions.
