2.162

彼論長行但釋頌意不釋其文相易故。意謂約果而說。既不可以色相比知如來。約因而談。亦不可以福相因得菩提果。若以感相福因得菩提者。轉輪聖王亦有相福能感相好。即彼輪王應是如來因果雖殊。為難相似細尋論文其意彌遠。

The prose of that treatise merely explains the meaning of the verse without explaining its wording, because its marks are easily understood. The meaning is: speaking in terms of the fruit, since one cannot infer and know the Tathāgata by physical marks, speaking in terms of the cause, one also cannot attain the fruit of bodhi through the cause of the marks of merit. If one could attain bodhi through the cause of the merit that brings about the marks, a wheel-turning sage king also has the merit of marks capable of bringing about the marks and characteristics, and so that wheel-turning king would be a Tathāgata. Although cause and fruit are distinct, the objection raised is similar. When one examines the text of the treatise closely, its meaning is ever more profound.
