2.228

何故。得福以得二智。三昧能遠離障而起化身。是故獲福文乘前起有。是故言而別破疑說非無福。於中有二。初示現有福。後明有敬信。既由敬信。是故福生。此初舉劣。

Why? Gaining merit is because attaining the two wisdoms and samādhi can keep obstacles distant and give rise to the nirmāṇakāya; therefore one obtains merit. The text follows upon what came before, and with the words 'is therefore', it separately refutes the doubt, saying it is not without merit. In this there are two parts: first, demonstrating that there is merit; later, clarifying that there is reverent faith. Since it comes from reverent faith, merit is produced. This first part raises the inferior [merit].
