Sūtra: "[The Dharma] expounded by the Tathāgata [can neither be grasped nor expounded; it is neither dharma] nor non-dharma."

Commentary: Next below is the explanation. Within it are two parts: first, the explanation following the questioning; later, the further questioning and explanation. This is the first. Because the imagined nature is non-existent, it is "not dharma"; because the nature of the selflessness of dharmas is real, it is "not non-dharma." Since the Dharma expounded is free from the marks of existence and non-existence, being neither dharma nor non-dharma, the speaker cannot by means of words reveal the marks of dharma and non-dharma, and the listener cannot according to words grasp at the marks of dharma and non-dharma. Therefore, the first half of the verse reveals this meaning, saying: "Expounding Dharma does not involve dual grasping; / Without expounding, it is free from the marks of words." This reveals that the Dharma of inner realization cannot be grasped or expounded as dharma or non-dharma, so as to establish the preceding [point of] having no attainment or expounding.
